Texan things - the BIG steak

I will come back to the Japan pictures very soon, but I wanted to tell you about the place we ate at last night for my birthday. A truly typical Texan place, very famous in Houston: Taste of Texas. As they don't take reservations, you have to show up and hope for the best. We had tried to go before, but it was on a weekend, and the wait was an hour and a half at the time (we gave up).

Last night was fine though, we only waited 10 minutes before being shown to our table. The waiter explained the menu to us, lots of steaks of course (but other, non-beef dishes too), and you can choose the one you want to eat from the butcher's counter (which we did - you look at the steaks they have in the refrigerated display, say which one you want, then they stick a metal tag with a number into it so you know it's your steak, and they present it to you before cooking it. When it is served you can check the number to see if it's your piece of meat!). We both went for the 16oz (that's 450g for you and me) New York strip sirloin steak, panicked when we saw the size of it, and eventually ate it all! It was absolutely de-li-cious! Cooked to perfection, with a tasty garlic/lime sauce on top. Wonderful wonderful, I'll definitely be back!

Here's the photo they have of it on their website:

The steak dish also comes with a visit to the salad bar for starters, and a side dish. I don't know how we found room for desserts afterwards (chocolate mousse slice and berries)!!
For info, they also have a 32oz (900g) porterhouse steak on the menu!!

What piggies!! The mind boggles at the size of that steak & it sounds like that was a memorable birthday. Are you fasting now...??!
