Barra - part 3

2nd day on Barra was Saturday 12 May, and it was rather sunny, whilst apparently it rained on most of the rest of the UK!

We walked down into Castlebay, where we rented bicycles and had a cooked breakfast in the local cafe.

Then we went on a little cycling tour, which took us to Vatersay, a small island just south of Barra. It used to be connected by a ferry, until a causeway was built, but to reach that causeway there is a BIG hill, a feature conveniently 'forgotten' by the husband when he described the roads on Barra as 'flat'... Anyway, after pushing my bike on foot to the top of the hill, then pedalling against the wind on Vatersay, we reached the south of the island, where this beach was waiting for us:








After a little sit-down, we carried on a few hundred yards to a small settlement actually called Vatersay, which is where the road ends. There we found a shed-post office in someone's garden!!



Taking a path through a cow field, and then biking on grass, we eventually reached a gorgeous, white-sanded empty beach right at the bottom of the island, and explored it before sitting down for our packed lunch.
